Modern Banks
Since 1950, mechanical banks have expanded from antique reproductions to inventive, modern creations reflecting pop culture, politics, and lifestyle. From cast iron classics to plastic, battery-powered collectibles, today’s banks blend tradition with innovation for collectors and kids alike.
Modern Mechanicals: The Evolving Legacy of Mechanical Banks
Originally when this club was formed, an antique mechanical bank was considered one made before 1935. Over the years this has drifted forward so that today a bank prior to 1950 is considered an antique bank though that leaves us with 75 years of banks still to be made. These banks through the present are roughly categorized today as modern mechanicals. Modern mechanicals may be reproductions of old antique banks or original concepts on their own. One of the first manufacturers of modern reproductions was the Book of Knowledge, which made reproductions of older banks starting in the 50’s. Occasionally they would tweak a bank such as what they did with the Darktown battery, which was recast as the Hometown battery. A second company known for their quality cast iron reproductions was James Capron. In the 60s, the Richards/Utexcal company produced 4 original concepts banks, one of which being the Birdie Putt, which deals with golf, and subsequently has been reproduced many times with many variations. Other banks by Richards, include Fisherman’s Luck, the Catboat Bank and the Bowling Bank. In the 70s and 80s, many new concept banks were created and in the 1990s, the Bits and Pieces Company produced many original creations. The above-mentioned banks have thus far been cast iron banks or cast metal. Batteries banks as well as other modern banks are made of tin, wood, and most commonly plastic. Earlier ones were made of Bakelite and more recent ones use batteries and computer chips to enhance their versatility. One of the big
companies for plastic banks is the Everlast company of Hong Kong. Thinkways pioneered the use of battery and microchips, adding light and sound to the action of the banks; they are especially known for their Star Wars and other Disney themed banks. Some modern banks were made and directed at the collectors market, such as by Al Davidson in the case of the Betsy Ross bank or by Mary Roebling for her Trenton Trust bank. Charlie Reynolds is especially held in high regard by this club as he made unique and creative mechanical banks for this club’s conventions each year for more than 30 years. It should be noted that modern banks were not always sold at toy stores; many were given away as premiums, when you bought something such as Paul Sebastian’s men’s cologne or sold at haberdashery stores. Modern banks reflect all aspects of society including, but not limited to politics, sports, movies, lifestyle, space, Mickey Mouse, and other popular figures. They continue to be produced today around the world.
